The Rooftop of America and a Little Hockey!

Last weekend, our family went to Aspen, Colorado to watch Noah and his Grizzlies team play in the Aspen Fall Faceoff. Noah is a first year Bantam and is on the small end but managed to hang in there with the big boys for four physical and grueling games. We were very proud of him as it was likely one of the hardest things that he has done.

Aspen was a blast but as our weekend came to a close, we thought “Hey, we’re in the Rockies...let’s stay another day.” So, our hockey weekend turned into a tour of the rooftop of America. It was short but amazing and great to revisit some of the places that I use to play at while I did my short stint of college life at Western State.

So, in 24 hours we managed to drive over Independence Pass to Buena Vista, Cottonwood Pass to Crested Butte and back to Gunnison. We may or may not have taken a wrong turn from Gunnison and crested Monarch Pass before realizing our mistake and then back to good ol' Gunny, down to Montrose over to Ouray, Red Mountain Pass (The Million Dollar Highway) to Silverton and then a hair raising, nail biting (actually made me cry) 4x4 adventure over a snowy Ophur Pass down into Telluride and then west to the La Sal Mountains and Moab, Utah. in Utah, we hit one more pass, US-191 or better known as the Indian Canyon Scenic Byway, which was stellar, even in the fading light of day. Whew!

That makes 5 Continental Divide Crossings and enough 14ers to make me want to pack my bags and head back for the real peaks of America and live out my days in Ridgeway! The Colorado Rockies are (in my opinion) heaven on earth and I loved every second of our crazy car ride... although I could have done with a little less of Noah’s singing.

Enjoy the MANY pictures...even though 90% of them were taken from a speeding truck window. Sad.

Cheers, Rachael
